Let’s go Warriors!  High School Highlights from the Edmonds-Woodway Athletic Booster Club

Our Edmonds-Woodway High School fall sports teams wrapped up impressive performances across the board. There is a lot for our community to be proud of this season!

  • Football: The Warriors finished the season strong with a 3-2 record in the last five games, capping off the season with a dominant 53-3 victory over Mariner. These guys played with a ton of heart and showed impressive resiliency this season. They will come back in 2025 even stronger!

  • Girls Soccer: The Varsity Warriors had a fantastic 11-6 season and a hard-fought appearance in the district playoffs. During the season they beat each of their Edmonds School District rivals and defeated Archbishop Murphy for the first time since 2019. Janey Hanson was the lead goal scorer with 12 goals and goalie Alice Everett had 9 clean sheets. It was a solid first season led by the new head coach – Kim Plumis – nice work Warriors!

  • Girls Volleyball: Edmonds-Woodway's volleyball team had a masterful 15-5 season coming within just one game of a state tournament berth. Individual recognition went to Addyson Pontak nominated for 1st team all-Wesco, and Sawyer Hiatt and Reinna Mostrales nominated for 2nd team all-Wesco. Congrats to the team and to new head coach Bart Foley on a successful first year. This team is full of heart and talent!

  • Girls Swimming: This team had a season to remember with a district championship and record-breaking performances from multiple team members. Simone Bennett, Tate Detjen, Maddy Morales-Tomas and Syd Bates broke the school record and placed 1st in the 200-yard medley relay. Simone Bennett captured her third consecutive title in the 100-yard backstroke, and Olivia Garcia claimed victory in the 100-yard butterfly. Congratulations on a season that reached new heights!

  • Boys Tennis: The boys’ tennis team shined with a stellar 12-2 regular season. Steven Anderson and Nalu Akiona faced off in an exciting District Singles Championship match. Both will represent Edmonds-Woodway at the state tournament in the spring. Go Warriors!

  • Cross Country: Both the girls’ and boys’ teams showcased impressive endurance and strategy this season with several runners setting personal records. Aliah Karl, Phoebe Budell, Mason Kempf, Luca Hooks and Will Thompson qualified for state where Aliah improved her time by 1:09 and moved up 65 places and Mason improved 80 places versus the 2023 state tournament. We can’t wait to see what they do next year!

Coach Spotlight

Michael Lesaca – Head Coach of EWHS Girls Swimming

The Girls Swimming Warriors won the district event for the first time in 26 years and set school records! Let’s hear from Coach Lesaca, the Wesco 3A co-Coach of the Year, on keys to his team’s success.

How do you foster leadership and accountability within your team?

I like to give my juniors and seniors opportunities to lead and put their stamp on the team. I still oversee things and give them advice during these opportunities but otherwise I like to give them their space. This far I've noticed that the autonomy pushes them to step up, especially in problem solving, delegating or organizing.

As a no-cut sport, I get all sorts of athletes with different goals and priorities, so rather than any specific rule, I try and hold each of them accountable through open and honest dialogue throughout the season on what goals are realistic and attainable based on the decisions they make. I also try and guide them towards what may or may not need to change based on their individual commitment levels as well as perform up to their standards.

What is your go-to hype song before a big game?

Daggmask by Dreamnation or Falling Down by Atreyu. Vastly different genres, but high bpm is key!

If you could have dinner with any sports legend even, who would it be?

Swimming: Natalie Coughlin; Non-Swimming: Ichiro

EWHS ABC Funding Highlights

The EWHS Athletic Boosters were able to purchase upgrades to the softball field making it safer and building school spirit. New warrior purple wind screens will be hung on the left field line/batting cages brightly touting our school logos enhancing the professional look of our facilities. Additionally, the wood backstop boards will be removed from behind home plate and new padding will be installed increasing player safety and improving fan visibility. Thank you to Josh McClure, our softball coach, for this impactful upgrade, and submitting a thorough grant to the EWHS Booster Board. Also, thank you to Lynnwood Honda, Alexander Marshman and Dunn Lumber for your generous donations.

Thank you to all community members that continue to donate to the EWHS Boosters!
